Passing the language and culture on to the next generations was the main concern of the polish families in australia so, from the beginning, they organized polish saturday schools in the suburbs of their settlement. Their role in preserving the language and culture cannot be overstated. Hundreds of children learn polish language in numerous schools run by the community, and many more polish students attend the schools of languages run by the state governments.

Sport

“Polonia” Soccer Club in Victoria, founded in l950, was the first of many Polish sports clubs established in Australia. Soccer and volleyball clubs have attracted many Polish young people during the last 75 years, and the annual Polish Tennis Championship has enriched Polish sports calendar.

The Polish Community in Victoria has developed a unique Annual Sports Festival, (Święto Sportowe) which for many years was recognised as the largest and the most popular event organized in the calendar of Polish communities throughout Australia. Held almost every year since l963 in Melbourne’s suburbs of Werribee and Lara, it was sponsored by the Polish Community Council in Victoria and attracted up to 5,000 spectators who come to support hundreds of participants from Melbourne and other capital cities of Australia.

This event involved the entire Community. In the past it has been recognised by the official presence of the premier of Victoria or his ministers. Since l990, celebrated at the end of February on the grounds of the Polish Centre in Albion, the Annual Sports Festival continues in the splendid tradition of the first 20 years.
